New Nicotine Pouch May Reduce Gum Irritation, Early Study Shows

A new type of nicotine pouch may help reduce the mouth and gum irritation often experienced by users of snus and traditional nicotine pouches. A small study recently published in Acta Odontologica Scandinavica found that this new pouch design—featuring a special barrier to limit contact between the pouch contents and the gums—led to noticeable improvements in oral comfort over just five weeks.
The product, called Stingfree PROTEX®, was tested by 23 Swedish dentists who were already regular users of snus or nicotine pouches. For the study, they switched entirely to the new pouch for five weeks. Before and after the trial, participants reported on their oral health, and photos of their mouths were taken and reviewed by an independent dentist who did not know which product had been used.
Key Results:
- Fewer Mouth Lesions: Before the study, nearly all participants (96%) had lesions from using snus or nicotine pouches. After switching to the new pouch, that number dropped to around 70%. Moderate-to-severe lesions disappeared entirely.
- Less Gum Irritation: Reported cases of gum inflammation, also known as gingivitis, were eliminated. Overall gum irritation decreased by 90%.
- No New Problems: No one experienced new irritation or worsening conditions during the study.
According to Professor Riccardo Polosa of the University of Catania (Italy), a leading expert in tobacco harm reduction, this development is an exciting breakthrough. “Not all nicotine pouches are created equal! This is a positive step forward for tobacco harm reduction,” he said. By making products that reduce risk and improve user experience, researchers hope to support people who are trying to move away from smoking.
This pilot study is small and based on self-reported outcomes, but it offers early evidence that smart design changes—like adding a protective barrier—can make nicotine products gentler on the mouth. For smokers and nicotine users looking for alternatives with fewer side effects, products like Stingfree PROTEX® may offer a better option.
As with all nicotine products, it’s best to consult healthcare professionals before switching. But for those who aren’t ready or able to quit nicotine entirely, this new pouch could help reduce some of the harm.
